About ISO 11669:2024 - Translation Projects - Framework

ISO 11669:2024 provides a framework for translation projects - covering the project parameters, specifications, and quality requirements that govern a translation project from initial brief through to final delivery. It is a process management standard that complements the competence-focused requirements of ISO 17100 (translation services) and the sector-specific requirements of ISO 20771 (legal translation) and ISO 18587 (post-editing).

The standard introduces the concept of translation project parameters - the set of variables that define the scope, requirements, and constraints of a translation project. These parameters include: the purpose of the translation (what the translation will be used for), the target audience (who will read the translation), the source content (the nature, volume, and complexity of the text), the target content requirements (the required quality level, style, and terminology), the production process (the translation workflow, tools, and resources to be used), and the delivery requirements (format, deadline, and acceptance criteria).

ISO 11669 specifies requirements for the translation brief - the document that captures the agreed project parameters and serves as the basis for the translation project. A well-defined translation brief reduces the risk of misunderstandings between clients and translation service providers and provides the basis for quality assessment.

The standard also covers translation specifications - the detailed technical requirements for the translation output including file formats, character encoding, terminology requirements, style guide references, and quality metrics. It specifies requirements for the management of translation memories, terminology databases, and other translation assets across projects.

ISO 11669 is used by translation service providers, corporate translation buyers, and language technology developers to establish consistent project management practices for translation. It is used alongside ISO 17100 (translation services), ISO 18587 (post-editing), ISO 20771 (legal translation), and ISO 5060 (machine translation quality evaluation).
