About ISO 14067:2018 - Carbon Footprint of Products
ISO 14067:2018 specifies principles, requirements, and guidelines for the quantification and communication of the carbon footprint of products (CFP). A product carbon footprint is the sum of greenhouse gas emissions and removals across a product's life cycle - from raw material extraction through manufacturing, distribution, use, and end-of-life treatment.
The standard is based on life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology as defined in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. It requires organizations to define a functional unit, establish system boundaries, and select a life cycle inventory (LCI) database for background data. The carbon footprint study must cover all life cycle stages within the defined system boundary and must account for all relevant GHG emissions expressed in CO2 equivalents (CO2e).
ISO 14067 distinguishes between a full carbon footprint of a product (covering the complete life cycle) and a partial carbon footprint (covering a defined subset of the life cycle). It also specifies requirements for carbon footprint communication, including the use of carbon footprint declarations (CFDs) and product category rules (PCRs) for sector-specific comparisons.
Key methodological requirements include allocation procedures for multi-output processes, treatment of biogenic carbon, treatment of land use change emissions, and handling of carbon capture and storage. The standard requires peer review of CFP studies used for comparative assertions made public.
ISO 14067 is used by manufacturers, retailers, and supply chain managers to measure and disclose product-level carbon emissions. It supports compliance with emerging product environmental footprint (PEF) regulations in the EU, green procurement requirements, and consumer-facing environmental labelling schemes. It integrates with ISO 14064 (organizational GHG reporting) and ISO 14068 (carbon neutrality claims).
