About ISO 14001:2015 - Environmental Management Systems

ISO 14001:2015 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), providing a framework for organizations to manage their environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner. The 2015 version introduced significant updates including a stronger emphasis on leadership commitment, life cycle thinking, and strategic environmental management. Note: ISO 14001:2026 is currently under development and will supersede the 2015 edition.

The standard follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and shares the Annex SL high-level structure with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001. Clause 4 requires organizations to identify environmental aspects and impacts, legal requirements, and interested party expectations. Clause 5 addresses leadership commitment and the establishment of an environmental policy. Clause 6 covers environmental objectives and planning for actions to address risks and opportunities. Clause 7 deals with support resources, competence, awareness, and communication. Clause 8 covers operational planning and control, including emergency preparedness and response. Clause 9 requires environmental performance evaluation through monitoring, measurement, compliance evaluation, and internal audits. Clause 10 addresses continual improvement and nonconformity management.

Key environmental aspects include air emissions, water discharges, waste management, energy consumption, and land contamination. ISO 14001 is used alongside ISO 14064 (GHG reporting), ISO 14067 (carbon footprint), and ISO 14068 (carbon neutrality) to build a comprehensive environmental and sustainability management framework.
