About ISO 9001:2015 - Quality Management Systems

ISO 9001:2015 is the world's most widely adopted Quality Management System (QMS) standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization. It specifies requirements that enable organizations of any size or sector to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. The standard is built on seven quality management principles: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management.

The standard is structured around the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and risk-based thinking. Clause 4 requires organizations to understand their context and the needs of interested parties. Clause 5 addresses leadership and management commitment, including establishing a quality policy. Clause 6 covers planning, including actions to address risks and opportunities. Clause 7 deals with support resources - people, infrastructure, knowledge, and documented information. Clause 8 covers operational planning and control, including design and development, and control of externally provided processes. Clause 9 requires performance evaluation through monitoring, measurement, analysis, and internal audits. Clause 10 mandates continual improvement and nonconformity management through corrective actions.

ISO 9001 certification is achieved through a third-party audit by an accredited certification body. Over one million organizations in more than 170 countries hold ISO 9001 certification. The standard is compatible with ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) and ISO 14001 (environmental management) for integrated management systems.
