About ISO 42001:2023 - AI Management Systems
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the world's first international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS), providing requirements and guidance for organizations that develop, provide, or use AI-based products and services. It establishes a framework for responsible AI governance, risk management, and continual improvement of AI systems.
The standard follows the Annex SL high-level structure and integrates with ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and other management system standards. Clause 4 requires organizations to understand their AI context, including the roles they play (developer, provider, customer) and the impacts of AI systems on individuals and society. Clause 5 addresses leadership commitment and the establishment of an AI policy. Clause 6 covers AI risk and impact assessment, including identification of AI-specific risks such as bias, lack of transparency, and unintended consequences. Clause 7 deals with support resources, competence, and awareness for AI governance. Clause 8 covers operational planning and control, including AI system design, data management, and testing. Clause 9 requires performance evaluation through monitoring, measurement, and internal audits of AI systems. Clause 10 addresses continual improvement.
Annex A provides AI-specific controls covering AI system impact assessment, data governance, transparency and explainability, human oversight, accountability, and responsible AI use. ISO 42001 is used by organizations implementing AI governance frameworks aligned with the EU AI Act, NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI.
