About ISO 45001:2018 - Occupational Health & Safety

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS), replacing the previous OHSAS 18001 standard. It provides a framework for organizations to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks, and create better, safer working conditions. The standard applies to any organization regardless of its size, type, or the nature of its activities.

ISO 45001 follows the same high-level structure (Annex SL) as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, making it easy to integrate into existing management systems. Clause 4 requires understanding the organization's context, including legal requirements and worker needs. Clause 5 emphasizes leadership and worker participation - a key differentiator from OHSAS 18001. Clause 6 covers hazard identification, risk assessment, and determination of legal and other requirements. Clause 7 addresses the support resources needed, including competence, awareness, and communication. Clause 8 covers operational planning and control, including management of change and procurement. Clause 9 requires performance evaluation through monitoring, measurement, internal audits, and management review. Clause 10 addresses improvement, including incident investigation and corrective actions.

Key concepts include hazard identification using techniques such as job safety analysis (JSA), risk assessment using the Risk Priority Number (RPN) method, and the hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE). ISO 45001 is used by organizations pursuing NEBOSH, OSHA, and NIOSH compliance alignment.
