About ISO 21001:2018 - Educational Organizations Management

ISO 21001:2018 specifies requirements for an Educational Organizations Management System (EOMS) - a learner-focused management system framework for organizations that provide educational products and services. It applies ISO 9001 principles to the education sector with additional requirements addressing the unique needs of learners, educators, and other educational stakeholders.

The standard is applicable to all types of educational organizations regardless of type, size, or the educational products and services they provide - including schools, universities, vocational training providers, corporate training departments, online learning platforms, and professional development organizations.

ISO 21001 follows the Annex SL high-level structure and adds education-specific requirements throughout. Clause 4 requires educational organizations to understand their context, including the needs and expectations of learners, staff, families, employers, and regulatory bodies. Clause 5 addresses leadership and management commitment. Clause 6 covers planning for the EOMS, including the identification of educational risks and opportunities. Clause 7 deals with support resources, including the competence of teaching staff, the adequacy of learning environments, and the management of educational resources. Clause 8 covers operational planning and control, including the design and delivery of educational programs, assessment of learner achievement, and management of learner records. Clause 9 requires performance evaluation through monitoring of learner satisfaction, learning outcomes, and internal audits. Clause 10 addresses continual improvement.

Key concepts unique to ISO 21001 include the principle of inclusive education - ensuring that educational products and services are accessible to learners with special needs - and the requirement to demonstrate the effectiveness of educational outcomes. ISO 21001 is used alongside ISO 29993, ISO 29994, and ISO 29995 to form the ISO education standards family.
