About ISO 29001:2020 - Petroleum, Petrochemical & Natural Gas Quality

ISO/TS 29001:2020 specifies sector-specific quality management system requirements for the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries. It is built on the foundation of ISO 9001:2015 and adds additional requirements and sector-specific guidance addressing the unique risks, regulatory environment, and operational complexity of the oil and gas sector.

The standard was developed jointly by ISO and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) and is recognized by major oil and gas companies as the preferred quality management standard for their supply chains. ISO/TS 29001 follows the clause structure of ISO 9001 and adds supplementary requirements in each clause. Key additions include requirements for product and service realization planning that addresses the specific hazards of petroleum and gas operations, enhanced requirements for design and development review including HAZOP (hazard and operability study) and FMEA (failure mode and effects analysis), requirements for the management of safety-critical equipment and systems, enhanced supplier qualification and monitoring requirements, and requirements for the management of nonconforming products in safety-critical applications.

The standard also requires organizations to maintain a documented process for the identification and management of product and service realization risks, including risks associated with subsurface operations, pressure systems, rotating equipment, and hazardous materials.

ISO/TS 29001 certification is required by many national oil companies (NOCs) and international oil companies (IOCs) as a condition of supplier qualification. It is used alongside ISO 14001 (environmental management), ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety), and sector-specific standards such as API Spec Q1 (quality management for manufacturing organizations for the petroleum and natural gas industry).
