About ISO iec-20000-1:2018 - IT Service Management Systems
ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 specifies requirements for an organization to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve a service management system (SMS). It is the international standard for IT service management (ITSM) and provides a framework for the delivery of managed services that meet agreed service requirements and customer expectations.
The standard is applicable to any organization - regardless of type, size, or the nature of the services it provides - that delivers IT services either internally to its own business units or externally to customers. It is the basis for certification of IT service management systems and is widely used by IT service providers, managed service providers (MSPs), cloud service providers, and internal IT departments.
ISO/IEC 20000-1 follows the Annex SL high-level structure shared by ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, and other management system standards, making it straightforward to integrate with existing management systems. Clause 4 covers the organizational context, including the scope of the SMS and the needs of interested parties. Clause 5 addresses leadership and management commitment. Clause 6 covers planning, including the management of risks and opportunities affecting the SMS. Clause 7 deals with support resources, competence, awareness, and communication. Clause 8 covers operation of the SMS, including the design, transition, delivery, and improvement of services.
The operational requirements in Clause 8 cover the full service management lifecycle: service portfolio management, relationship and agreement management (managing customer and supplier relationships and service level agreements), supply and demand management (capacity and availability planning), service design and transition (designing new or changed services and transitioning them into live operation), resolution and fulfilment (incident management, service request management, and problem management), and service assurance (service availability, service continuity, and information security management).
ISO/IEC 20000-1 aligns closely with the ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) framework and is used alongside ISO/IEC 27001 (information security management) and ISO 9001 (quality management) for integrated IT governance.
