MSDS and SDS,
clearly explained.

A safety data sheet tells you what a chemical is, what can go wrong, how to work with it safely, and what to do if something does go wrong. This guide turns the document into a practical tool.

MSDS is the older name.
SDS is the current standardized format.

What it is

A document built for a decision point.

SDS means Safety Data Sheet. It is the current term used by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard. You may still hear MSDS, or Material Safety Data Sheet, used informally. The practical goal is the same: make chemical hazard information available and understandable before, during, and after work.

Under the U.S. Hazard Communication Standard, chemical manufacturers and importers evaluate hazards and prepare labels and safety data sheets. Employers with hazardous chemicals must maintain labels and SDSs for exposed workers and train workers to handle the chemicals appropriately. Read OSHA's Hazard Communication overview.

The 16-section map

Every section has a job. Only a few are urgent for most tasks.

OSHA Appendix D specifies the information that belongs in Sections 1 through 11 and 16. Sections 12 through 15 may appear but are not mandatory under OSHA. See OSHA Appendix D.

Product name, recommended use, supplier details, and emergency telephone number.

Chemical identity and applicable ingredient or concentration information.

A worked example

How to pull the important information from an SDS.

Imagine a worker is preparing to use a fictional ethanol-based surface cleaner. The following is a reading example, not instructions for any real product.

Section 1

Match the label

Check that the product identifier and intended use match the container. If they do not, stop and get the correct SDS.

Section 2

Recognize the hazard

Look for the signal word, pictograms, and hazard statements. A flame pictogram, for example, signals a flammability hazard that changes storage and ignition-control decisions.

Section 7 + 8

Set up the task

Read handling and storage guidance, then identify engineering controls and PPE. Follow the employer's task procedure if it is more specific.

Sections 4 + 6

Prepare for the unexpected

Before the task starts, know the first-aid and accidental-release information that applies to the product and workplace response plan.

Information is only useful when workers can reach and use it.

OSHA's Hazard Communication program is designed so that people working with hazardous chemicals have accessible, understandable information. OSHA describes this as an evolution from a worker's right to know toward a right to understand.

Employers must ensure SDSs are readily accessible during each work shift to employees when they are in their work area(s).

Employers must provide information and training at initial assignment and when a new chemical hazard that employees have not previously been trained about is introduced into the work area.

For hazardous chemicals, OSHA ties hazard information together through workplace labels, safety data sheets, and appropriate worker training.

For workers, the immediate action is simple: if you need the SDS, ask. If the sheet is hard to find, does not match the product, or does not make the required controls clear, pause the task and raise the issue through the workplace's safety process.

MSDS and SDS FAQ

What is the difference between an MSDS and an SDS?

MSDS means Material Safety Data Sheet, an older term used before the U.S. Hazard Communication Standard aligned with the Globally Harmonized System. SDS means Safety Data Sheet, the current standardized 16-section format. Many workplaces still say MSDS informally, but the document provided under the current OSHA format is an SDS.

Does OSHA require safety data sheets?

For hazardous chemicals covered by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, manufacturers and importers must prepare labels and safety data sheets, and employers with hazardous chemicals must maintain labels and SDSs for exposed workers and train them to handle chemicals appropriately. Requirements and scope are set out in 29 CFR 1910.1200.

What information should I look at first on an SDS?

First confirm the product in Section 1. Then review Section 2 for the hazard signal word, pictograms, hazard statements, and precautions. For a task, read Section 7 for handling and storage, Section 8 for controls and PPE, and Sections 4, 5, and 6 for the relevant emergency information. The exact priority depends on the product and work being performed.

How can a worker get an SDS?

Ask the supervisor or the person responsible for the workplace Hazard Communication program. Employers must ensure SDSs are readily accessible during each work shift to employees when they are in their work area. The SDS must be the current document for the product being used, not a similar product or a generic summary.

Are all 16 SDS sections required by OSHA?

OSHA Appendix D requires the specified information under sections 1 through 11 and section 16. Sections 12 through 15 may be included, but OSHA does not require them on an SDS. A supplier may still provide those sections because they are relevant to other transport, environmental, or regulatory frameworks.

Can I use an SDS instead of workplace training?

No. An SDS is a source document, not a replacement for task-specific instruction. OSHA requires employers to provide information and training at initial assignment and when a new chemical hazard that employees have not previously been trained about is introduced into their work area.

In practical terms, workers need understandable information about the hazardous chemicals they may encounter, the hazards, protective measures, and how to access safety data sheets. OSHA describes the Hazard Communication Standard as moving from a right to know to a right to understand through standardized labels, SDSs, and training.

How do I know whether an SDS belongs to the product in front of me?

Match the product identifier on the workplace container label to Section 1 of the SDS. Confirm the manufacturer or supplier when possible and check the revision date. Do not rely on a sheet for a similar-looking product, a different concentration, or an old formulation.
